Google Docs in the Classroom

Workshop Overview

Google docs provides online, free applications that let people share work and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations online. It lets teams work together on a project, pupils share work and ideas with their teachers' and staff collaborate on planning documents. It also helps pupils organise work where they can reach it wherever they are, no matter who is off sick and whether or not they have remembered their thumb drive. The list of possible uses in schools is huge, and the system itself is simple to set up and use.

This session is a hands on introduction to the Google Docs applications. The aim is that you leave the session ready to get your kids using it in your own classroom. We will look at how to use the document, presentation, spreadsheet and form and have lots of opportunity to practise using them in the session. You will be welcome to focus on just one particular aspect if that is what interests you.

We'll also talk about similarities and differences between Google Docs and other office applications, along with suggestions as to how you can use these features in your classroom to help students work together better.

All participants will need a google account. Please check with your school to see if they provide one, and if not, contact me before the event about setting one up.

Workshop Programme

The workshop will be split into 4 main sections, each of which will be followed by a chance to check out what we're talking about on the computers.

  1. An overview and tour of the different parts of Google docs
  2. How is it different/ the same as other office software?
  3. What sort of things can it be used for in the classroom?
  4. What do I need to be aware of before starting to use it.

If you have any google doc experiences you would like to share, or any specific questions you would like addressed, feel free to bring them with you on the day or email me beforehand at hle@uwcsea.edu.sg

Workshop Materials

You will need a google account in order to join in the session. While it's possible to sign up then, it would be better to do this in advance. It may be worth checking with your school whether or not they already provide you with a Google account that you can use.
